As a result of dreams, conversations with clients, and conversations with those spirits I would call familiar, I have decided to write a blurb on the subject of alphabets of desire (AODs), as discussed by Austin Osman Spare, Peter Carroll, and other such objects.
To start, how does one define an AOD?
In short, an AOD is a set of symbols one creates that represents, to him or her, various magical goals, functions, intents, processes, etc. How or why you create such a thing is really rather unimportant in my opinion. Instead, its important that it turns you on, on some level. Its equally vital that this symbol set speaks to your deep mind, as that is the place from which this form of magic flows forth.
How you go about creating a magical alphabet is totally up to you, but the useful tidbit to understand is that they will likely work similarly to runes. Having said as much, the picture above is only one example of my own symbol-set. You are free to be as artistic and creative as you see fit.
As a word to the wise, I'd suggest taking your symbol set, in part, from your surroundings. If it helps you to do so, make the alphabet physical and chain different objects together in a working. If that's not helpful, skip it, and use pictures instead.
I do hope that helps.
