Luck as a Resource

8/29/2016

It is relatively common, in our current day & age, for us to refer to ourselves as lucky or unlucky, blessed or not. It is not, however, commonplace to consider how best to change one's standing in such an arena. Sure, there are always discussions cropping up in one magical forum or another about how to win a lottery, how to better one's luck when gambling, or how to remove jinxes, but it's not so commonplace to see folks discussing how it works.

Luck's sort of taken for granted; we think that we've either got it or we don't. This is what I'm looking to change by writing this post. I wish to start a dialogue surrounding Luck and its Mysteries so that we all might benefit...

Bear in mind, this is all UPG & experience rolled into one post. I might have picked up some of this in old books or from conversations with past friends and colleagues...I don't rightly remember (so if I stole your idea, apologies; consider this mention your due credit). Consider this a disclaimer before we dive right in, seeing as how we're up to some tricky, tricky things. ;)

"Luck be a Lady, tonight."
-Frank Sinatra
That stated & out of the way, there are many schools of thought in and around the topic of Luck. I won't go so far as to discuss them, as otherwise this post'll go from a blog bost to being a book.

To me, Luck is something of an external entity, at times, but it also seems to be a resource that can be tapped and used according to our will. If we've got a jar of special olive oil, loaded with herbs, we can use up a good chunk of it, then work to refill the jar so that the remains don't go to waste; Luck is the same way.

We use Luck to enhance the flavor of our lives, then we need to fill that jar back up. But how does one do this?

Luck can be tapped and refilled through several sources, not least of which is our ancestors. We've inherited almost everything from them, and so it stands to reason that our Luck and the relationship we have with it is in some way tied to them. This is a rather Nordic concept, but it shows up in China, Japan, and India some as well.

By giving offerings to those that came before, you're essentially asking them to look upon you favorably and assist you in your ventures. In so doing, those attentions can be used to protect you from harm, better your opportunities, and help you make good on the potentials that crop up.

Alternatively, you can give offerings to your Luck itself. Do good deeds as a offering to this aspect of Self, and use those compassionate actions to refill the jar. As you do so, you benefit and those around you do so as well. This then creates greater opportunities for excellence on your part, and generally helps to ensure that you're well-liked.

When this Luck is well-established, then you can seek to "tap" it at crucial times, using it on things that are important to you. Sometimes turning the odds in your favor is a matter of this Lucky Intervention that overcomes the ill-standing at play.  Its saved my bacon a few times.

Food for thought..

Blessings,

And it is now that we reach a conclusion of the Fool's Journey. After stepping out into the world, taking it by the seams, and making room for ourselves and what we desire, we've created our own conclusion. And in this end is a new beginning, with greater challenges & rewards ahead.

I thank you for joining me along the way.

For those of you who have entered into this journey later than others, below is a step-by-step list of each of the footfalls along the way. May they serve you well both now and well into the future.

"Life is not about finding yourself, its about creating yourself. Who do you want to be?"

-George Bernard Shaw
Picture
We've reached a final stepping-stone on our journey before it begins anew. We've accomplished great things and brought those successes home with us. Now that we've done so, it is time to give thanks and share what you've learned.

Enjoy this time, and look forward to beginning again as a wiser, more well-learned Fool. This will come to an end, and every end is a beginning. The Wheel turns for us all, great or small.

Blessings,

"Order: Let all things have their places; let each part of your business have its time."
-Benjamin Franklin
Picture
Now that you've swam through the illusory waters of the Moon and basked in the warm rays of the Sun, it is time again to use that awareness.

Take stock of all things in your life. Good and bad. Determine what weighs you down and remove those things from your life. We've seen before how the things we own and covet can limit us, and so now is the time to sever those unhelpful ties and enrich those that support and help us.
  • Work to get yourself out of debt. Those helpful debts are a much weightier burden than you realize.
  • Divine to determine which things will hold value and which will not.

This is a trying time for those who are overly attached to their possessions. The things you own, own you.

"The mind is exercised by the variety and multiplicity of the subject matter, while the character is moulded by the contemplation of virtue and vice."
-Quintilian
Picture
Those who have again conquered their new-found delusions have entered into Sol's realm. They've set their egos aside, some, and allow themselves to bask in the warmth of this sphere.

In this stage, take heart and revitalize yourself. Breathe in this vitality, and let the inherent clarity enlighten you.

The Sun is a period of deep reflection and introspection. Its the time to clarify your intentions and solidly define your goals. The work here is a heavy load, but it is far more cerebral than it is physical.

"There is a fine line between Genius and Madness"
-Unknown
Picture
In endeavoring to do great things and achieve sweeping successes, one may fall prey to the illusions of the Moon. It can, in many ways, represent a distraction from within, as the Moon-brained only ever see what they want to see.

The Moon reflects what it is pointed at it. Those reflections can often be desires from your Shadow. Don't make the mistake of being taken from your path by delusious of grandeur. Do not allow madness of ego to overtake and ruin your hard work.

At this point, you need an outside source you can trust. You will not likely be able to see the way clearly, and a second set of eyes can be most helpful.

Remember, statistically speaking, most crimes occur during a full moon. This is not without cause.

“If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”
-the Dalai Lama XIV
Picture
In successfully joining the opposite forces in your life and causing them to cooperate and work for you, you've started upon this step.

I see the Star as a summons of a kind, from the Divine. A call to grow ever-further and work towards loftier goals.

As you begin to use your newly built Tower to bridge the gap between Heaven and Earth, you're likely to engage in something that changes the World around you. So use this muse to do just that: Spend time meditating and planning, divining and writing.

"Even cowards can endure hardship; only the brave can endure suspense."
-Mignon McLaughlin
Picture
The Devil and our response to it directs the flow of energies represented by this card.

It either speaks to union or tragedy, depending on your choice. If you ran scared from your Shadow and tried to render it powerless, this will likely represent a social or financial tragedy. So too is this true if you've attempted to command it and failed.

If you've taken ownership of your "Dark Daemon" and succeeded, however, this step will represent a building of your Tower. It will be the construction of a more well-rounded, balanced, and powerful you.

This can and often does seperate you from your peers. It does not make you their superior, but it does make you different. Be aware, this will generate a change in outside perception, good or bad.

"I have my addictions, or rather my addictions have me."
-Scroobius Pip
Picture
When Temperance's clarity has faded from view, the Devil comes into play.

This is not an abstract, discarnate entity that we're speaking of....no. It is you at your basest and most cruel. Its the part of you that greedily yearns to consume more and more. It represents your fears, concerns, and those things you do to sate your hungers.
When confronting our internal demons, there are many schools of thought. I am of the mind that they are a part of us: our Jungian Shadow, and so we should acknowledge this aspect of ourselves. Make it work for us. Learn its ins and outs, and use those revealed powers and potencies to grow.

Only then are we truly temperate and balanced. To fail, here, is to knock yourself back several paces.

Be forewarned that this is a sticking point for many.

“Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.”
-Lao Tzu
Picture
The step past the Abyss that is the Death of the Self-That-Was is Temperance, so known for its even serenity. This marks the new and well-balanced you, a certain milestone of your achievements.

You're beginning to lead a harmonious life, and now is not the time for extreme actions. Instead, it is a point at which you should be thankful and take ample time to rest and plan the way forward.
You will be forced to balance portions of your life that seem to be at odds. In so doing, you'll learn that these discordant aspects of your life are actually two sides of the same coin.
  • Enchant for clarity
  • Enchant for balance
  • Enchant for Self-Awareness

Temperance is the phrase "Know Thyself" in action.
