Spirits are generally autonomous beings with their own controls and desires. They’re basically a non physical version of people or animals (or some combination thereof), and that’s not a diminishment. It means that they’re as peculiar and particular as we are, and they are just as able to quip & choose petty responses as we are.
As such, favor’s pretty important to curry. The more they like you, the better, as we’re all more inspired to help those we like. Freebies are for friends and folks we are inspired to be kind to, so the same goes for them. Some spirits are purely transactional in nature, but many are willing to educate and guide our efforts provided we’re not unpleasant about it.
If you’re looking to start onto your journey with spirit work, interface with what lived around you (provided those entities seem friendly). Try to develop an awareness of what they like and provide those things as offerings. Ask for nothing at first, and after three or four offerings & positive interactions, ask for things that are well within their range: peaceful engagements with nature, getting your neighbor to turn down his stereo, better harvests for those of you with small gardens, or good grades for your kids.
It’s not a huge thing, but it makes all the difference because most relationships follow this same pattern. Use this to your advantage & for the betterment of your day to day experience. The additional bonus is that the spirits of place will be more interested in helping you, as they too will be in a better spot.
Blessings,
Chris
PS: Don’t be surprised if this leads to a particularly beautiful yard. In every location I’ve lived since I’ve begun this practice, there has been a noticeable change in the quality of the vegetation. Everything from grass to roses to tomatoes have benefited, which is a nifty side-effect.
