Its also devilishly tricky at some points, so its the kind of thing you'll want some guidance in doing. Let's dig right in!
Magickal objects are haunted, plain and simple. They have a spirit within them that acts as an intelligent agency that can work on your behalf or work against you. These objects can range from being a ring to a statue to a hairbrush or vial of perfume - what they're made of matters, but almost anything can be enchanted to some extent. Everything you own has some manner of a charge to it, and for some, these objects become ensouled in their own right. When they do, that's when these objects start to become spiritually powerful tools that have meaningful depth, breadth, and potency to them.
Be aware, its different from object to object, and not all things are created equal. Items that are mass produced will naturally have less of essence or soul to them than those things that are handmade, and how much soul an object has very much depends on the maker, and the materials used. This skill can be developed over time, but as with tattooing, it depends heavily upon the person trying to leave their indelible mark on a thing.
With this being something of a spectrum, what lies beneath the surface matters....more importantly, your awareness of what lies beneath that surface matters. If you try to imbue powerful magic into a lifeless tool, it'll take a lot more juice than working with an already-living tool with set boundaries, likes and dislikes, and lifeless or no, the tool you're working with needs to resonate with you AND your end goal. This is mandatory, as without that connection and meaningful resonance, you won't be able to gain much headway with this.
That said, let's start with how one begins to approach an item and comprehend its inner flows.
My favorite way to assess an item and its qualities is to meditate upon it, as the act of doing so can allow me to connect with what's within. By focusing intently upon the nature and essence of the spirit within, I can draw that entity out and connect with it to find out more about its wants, needs and tendencies, and it is that awareness that then opens the door to actively doing magical work with or on an object. To do this kind of ritual Work, you too will need to develop that psychometric sense.
So find a quiet place and sit with the object you're interested in enchanting. Close your eyes, quiet your mind and try to connect with the essence within. Pay attention to the impressions you receive and take careful note of them, as those will be your guide. You may get nothing, or you may get loads of useful details - it depends on the object and it depends on your psychic skills. If you've not developed this inner awareness, this will be pretty hard for you at first, and THAT IS OK! Not everyone starts out being able to touch-read items and objects, so if you hit a wall, keep at it and keep practicing. As with lifting weights, you'll get better at it over time!
When you're done with that process, you should have a pretty good idea of what's up with the spirit within. If the item feels empty, then it'll be up to you to create the essence that will eventually reside within it as a result of your intended spellwork. If the item feels like its full of personality and presence, you'll be working to convey blessings to that entity within as a part of this ritual process. Either way, you're "looking for the lack", so to speak, and your rituals to follow will need to focus on attending that perceived lack.
Your spell needs to address that lack in order for the object to be imbued with greater purpose and potency. You'll be looking to create and embrace a harmony within the object through this procedure, and that balance becomes a foundation for all of the great things you're looking to achieve.
To give you some ideas, if you're looking to enchant an object to make you appear more beautiful after its used, you'll want to use attention-grabbing herbs like Violet and Cinquefoil. If you're looking to command respect, I'd recommend High John & something spicy and full of smell (clove, garlic, peppers - the fierier, the better!). If you're looking to create a better feel-good response from self-care with that object, I recommend lavender and orange peel.
Whatever you do, you're free to formulate the spell according to what looks, feels, and smells right, so get creative. There are hundreds of thousands of potential recipes for this, and when you've got the materials for the ritual picked out, the next step is to construct the ritual's flow such that the energy and blessings created are communed to the object itself rather than into your life. I recommend using grids and grid sigils if you're not sure how to direct that energy, as they make this process much easier overall. ;)
When you're sure you've got it, carry that ritual out and make official this act of ritual conveyance. Let the ritual complete and then you'll want to sit with the object following the enchantment and feel for any changes that might be there. If you were successful in this, you should feel a distinct change. If you don't feel a change, you'll either need to revisit the development of your psychometric muscles as noted above or you'll need to tweak and repeat the ritual process. This is pretty advanced magick, but its readily achievable for those who are willing to sit with it and tinker a bit.
Enjoy!
Blessings,
